One European Commissioner for Education, Research and Innovation
President Ursula von der Leyen has announced the candidates for the European Commission. For the newly created Innovation and Youth portfolio, she proposes Bulgarian Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Society since 2017. The portfolio has two components: education, research and innovation; and culture, youth and sport. Gabriel should ensure the rapid implementation of the new Horizon Europe framework programme, the elaboration of the European Universities Initiative and the finalisation of the European Research Area (ERA). Research Europe is hearing only positive reactions to her forthcoming appointment. Margrethe Vestager will be the new European Commissioner for Digital Affairs. In addition, she will retain her competence for Competition.
