VARIO argues for a better framework for achieving policy goals through smart KPIs.

VARIO attaches the utmost importance to the coordination of objectives at different government levels. In order to achieve objectives, measurable targets must be linked to them in the form of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). This is now mainly done at the lowest levels, of actors, structures etc.
According to VARIO, there should also be a more systemic and horizontal view, i.e. how different objectives and associated KPIs together contribute to higher objectives and ultimately to a long-term strategy at the level of the Flemish Government. VARIO calls for regular feedback/evaluation on whether objectives are being achieved. VARIO therefore recommends to further develop the necessary monitoring tools for this purpose.
This is in a nutshell what VARIO proposes in its new advisory report 'Conceptual framework for the establishment of KPI's in function of policy objectives'. The advice was provided to Minister Philippe Muyters on 29 May. A concrete interpretation of the conceptual framework for the EWI policy domain will take place in a next advisory report, planned for September. The result will be a qualitative set of indicators on the basis of which policy can monitor and evaluate its performance.
