VARIO chairman signs Joint Statement of European STI Advisory Councils for a strong and independent European Research and Innovation Area
On November 10, VARIO spoke virtually with the presidents and secretaries of 14 other European Advisory Councils for Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) at their annual meeting. An important topic was the impact of the corona crisis on the STI policy of the different countries and on the work programmes of the advisory councils. The future of science in a European context was also the central theme. Professor Birgitta Wolff, chairman of the German Rectors' Conference (HRK), presented a discussion paper on the new development goals of the European Research Area (ERA). The HRK proposes that there should be a discussion about the fundamental values of the ERA and about opening up the ERA to research institutions from the rest of the world. During the meeting, the VARIO chairman, Lieven Danneels, signed a joint statement with 11 other advisory councils calling, among other things, for an increase in funding for research and innovation in the EU's Multi-annual Financial Framework (MFF). They immediately expressed their support for the agreement reached (at the same time) between the German Presidency and the European Parliament in this respect, and urged the member states to approve it quickly.
