Summary
In its advisory report VARIO draws the attention of the Flemish Government to the volatile situation for researchers in the US. How can Flanders respond strategically to this? What are the possible risks and opportunities? How can Flanders position itself amid initiatives by other EU member states and regions in attracting top international talent?
Based on its previous advisory reports and up-to-date information, VARIO presents four broad recommendations within a coordinated Flemish action plan:
- Continue to improve the framework conditions related to Migration and Admission Policies that make our region more competitive for attracting top international talent, compared to other European member states and regions.
- Ensure vacancies are filled as competitively as possible through broad as well as more targeted communication efforts.
- Establish a temporary coordinating contact point to provide structured and reliable information, along with advice regarding the disruptions in the US.
- Even in the context of the volatile situation in the US, Flanders must optimally influence Europe and its Research, Innovation, and Industrial policy.
