Summary

This concept note contains the policy vision on the establishment of the lifelong learning platform. Commitment to lifelong learning has long been one of VARIO's top priorities - Flanders needs real breakthroughs in this area if it is to effectively become a top innovative knowledge region - and the Council therefore fully supports the establishment of such platform. VARIO hopes that this will indeed lead to cooperation and synergies. The four challenges and ten assignments as outlined in the concept paper also receive the approval of the Council. VARIO underlines the importance of an 'evidence-based' approach and recommends looking at successful international examples to catch up with Flanders in lifelong learning. Furthermore, the Council advises to formulate concrete and ambitious goals. The monitoring assignment of the platform is a good thing and VARIO hopes that this will be done in a sufficiently granular manner to allow for refined measures. VARIO absolutely wants to emphasise the importance and potential of innovation for lifelong learning. Finally, VARIO advocates a lean and innovative composition of the platform, with a focus on the expertise of its members.
