Retrospective on the study day ’Future of the Bio-Economy in Flanders’

06.12.2024

On November 20th, the study day 'Future of the Bio-Economy in Flanders' took place in Brussels. Experts and stakeholders gathered to discuss the current state and future of the bio-economy in Flanders. There were lively discussions about the practical implementation of new bio-economic initiatives and the relevant policy. Some key takeaways:

  • The bio-economy is complex, and every action must keep an eye on the broader bio-economy. The many entrepreneurs already involved are succeeding in this and are providing many additional benefits outside their own sector, such as reducing logistics, reducing environmental impact and emissions, material recovery, etc.
  • The complexity of the bio-economy also creates a complex policy framework. There is a need for space for experiments in broad consultation with policymakers. The study day showed that there is certainly interest within the government to engage in triple-helix consultations.
  • A frequently mentioned obstacle was regulations and the inconsistency between countries and regions, but also within Flanders. During the panel discussion Johan Martens, VARIO council member, also pointed out the many redundant rules in Flanders. The current regulations hinder innovation and the development from lab to practice.

A report of the study day has been prepared and all presentations are also available. The event was organized by the Minaraad, VARIO, SALV, ODE, OVAM, Circular Flanders and the Department of Economy, Science and Innovation.
