Advisory report 12: Strategic exploration of Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI). Part I: hydrogen

20 July 2020

Early 2020, VARIO was asked by Flemish Minister of Economy and Innovation Hilde Crevits "to carry out a strategic exploration and analysis of the strengths and opportunities that exist for Flanders for the various possible Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEIs). [...] After all, we will have to make choices about which projects we want to prioritise with our knowledge institutions and industry. We need to focus our resources and for this we need the necessary substantiation. VARIO can provide an important entry point to that end. [...]". This opinion is the first in a triptych.

Summary

At the time of the request for advice by Minister Crevits, a call for the submission of 'expressions of interest' for an IPCEI 'Hydrogen Technologies and Systems' was already launched by the FPS Economy with June 2020 as the deadline. VARIO chose to be the first to map the hydrogen value chain and hand it over to the minister to substantiate its decisions within this value chain.

This shows that Flanders has all the assets to play a leading role in Europe in the field of hydrogen, given the right support.
