Diependaele questioned on the use of AI following VARIO advisory report

16.04.2026

In the WEWIS Committee of the Flemish Parliament, the recent advisory report by VARIO on strategic choices and artificial intelligence was discussed. Cd&v member De Roo asked Minister-President of the Government of Flanders Diependaele how Flanders can strategically deploy its AI capabilities in strong sectors such as life sciences and biotechnology, in line with the advisory report. De Roo pointed out that “digital technologies and artificial intelligence offer significant long-term potential, but currently show limited alignment with Flemish capabilities.”Diependaele emphasized that Flanders is already investing in AI through existing instruments and European cooperation, but that decisions on the use of AI should be left to companies themselves. “I am not going to determine what a company should use AI for. Entrepreneurs are strong and creative enough to decide for themselves how AI can add value to their business,” Diependaele stated. He added that the government is focusing on creating the right framework conditions, such as access to data, infrastructure and computing power.
